June 2016Super news to report. In 2014-2015 we were serving 4 school districts with over 7,000 items given out with a value of $9,000. We wrapped up the 2015-2016 school year serving 11 school districts and 2 charter schools with over 89,000 items given out with a value of $118,000. The impact Giving the Basics is having on school children is incredible. Please click here: https://youtu.be/83fto_a8eg0 to watch our new school video and the testimonials from the administration.
We can’t forget about the 55 shelters and pantries that we serve and the impact we have had on them in the last several months of 2016. Here are some recent testimonials that we received.
“I appreciate the small things that some people take for granted coming out of jail with nothing is rough and donors like you make it easier for people to do the right thing and get back on track. Thank you.”
“What a blessing to receive the basics items. As a single parent who works part-time, it really helps. I have 3 kids, one with a disability that has frequent hospital visits. So, again on behalf of me and my family thank you.”
“I’m a single mother who takes care of my child on my own. These items help us survive. My child’s father was killed in 2013 and I thought I would not be able to get back on my feet, but I’m warm hearted to know there are people to help. Thank you all.”
“Our client has been using bread for toilet paper, because he could not afford toilet paper. With Giving the Basics he now has access to toilet paper and not be ashamed.”
We have had incredible support with product drives through companies, churches, and schools. Just in the last 5 months we have recorded over 941 volunteers with over 1,800 hours served helping at the warehouse. Kansas City Chief players and Red Coaters came down to show their support just last month. We were honored with a $1,000 check through the Curry Foundation in honor of Becca Lueke family foundation from 7th grader Isabel Mayer at Visitation School who took the time to write a proposal for us. Becca lost her life in a tragic car accident, but her memory continues as we use the money to purchase over a thousand basic human dignity items.
We are excited to announce the forming of a new young executive board for young adults from 24 to 34 to be involved in communicating the Giving the Basics mission statement with “FUN” activities throughout the Kansas City area. Their next board meeting is June 22nd, 6:30pm at the Brooksider if you know of someone in that age group wanting to join incredible service leaders of our community. The first meeting took place at the warehouse in May. These young executives will be a strong asset to the mission of Giving the Basics.
